Hello!

My name is Micaiah Higgins. I’m originally from Wisconsin, where I began formal piano lessons at age six. As soon as I started, I fell in love with the piano and music in general. It was a place where I could explore, create, and reflect throughout my life. This love and joy found through music motivated me to pursue the profession of piano teaching to share this passion with others. I attended Cedarville University and graduated highest honors with a Bachelor of Music degree in Keyboard Pedagogy and have since become nationally certified through Music Teacher National Association. While attending Cedarville, I received the Faculty Music Award, Love Pedagogy Scholarship, and the Lyle and Connie Anderson Endowed Music Award. I had the privilege of performing in the University Jazz Band, Wind Symphony, and as an accompanist for vocal and instrumental soloists as well as musical theater productions. I was also able to serve as president of Cedarville’s collegiate chapter of the Music Teacher National Association. Though primarily classically trained, I have gained some experience in lead sheets, jazz improvisation, and classical improvisation.

Moving to Dayton in 2022, I began the process of building my own piano studio. Through my experiences both receiving and giving piano lessons, I realize the importance of an encouraging, supportive environment in promoting growth and learning. I seek to foster this environment in every lesson and interaction. Working with students of all ages (young beginners through adults) leveling from beginner through early advanced, I appreciate the diversity of needs and experiences students bring to lessons and seek to create individualized lesson plans, resources, and approaches to best help each student achieve their musical goals. Watching students fall in love with music and gain confidence in their own abilities has become my ultimate goal as a teacher, and I look forward to being a part of this creation of beauty through music in every lesson.

FAQ

Where do lessons take place?

All lessons will be in the student’s home, giving families more flexibility without commutes and transporting lesson materials.

What instrument do I need?

All students will need either an acoustic piano or a full, 88 key digital piano with weighted keys.

Will there be performance opportunities?

There are two performances each year, usually early December and early spring. These are optional performances but always available for any student who wishes to participate.

How much do lessons cost?

For pricing and billing questions, please request the studio policy in the contact section.

What is the required age to begin piano lessons?

While there is no age limit to beginning lessons, I would typically recommend waiting until the student is at least 6. For students between 5-7, I’d recommend taking advantage of the free trial lesson to ensure the student is ready to begin lessons.

Will materials be included in tuition cost?

Each student will be responsible for purchasing their own books and materials. I will communicate any books the students will need in lessons and via e mail.

Will lessons be available year-round?

I offer lessons in three terms: Fall, Spring, and Summer. There are brief breaks between terms.

Can I pay by the lesson?

Lessons are offered by semester with the option to pay in full (with a 5% discount applied), or in installments.

I’ve missed the start of the term. Can I still sign my student up for lessons?

Yes! I can offer you a prorated plan for the term.

Can I try a lesson before I commit to a full term?

Absolutely! New students are offered a free trial lesson to explore what lessons may look like.

How much will my student need to practice?

While different levels and ages may require different times, it can be expected that students will practice at least 30 minutes for about 5 days each week.
